Great news!

Our adorable little boy...

William's cleft team appointments went well yesterday. It was a long day and the boy was tired by the end of it but Will pretty much charmed everyone with his outgoing personality and sense of humor. We were told by the surgeon that William's palate 'looks great!', and he'll need no immediate surgery for now. At a later date, like when he's around 4 and a half to 5 we may consider some cosmetic surgery for his nose as it's tipped downward a bit. It's hard to see in photos and if we decide to do that the surgeon may also decrease some of the extra tissue under his upper lip at that time. He will require a surgery around age 7 to widen his palate (which is typical of cleft affected kids). He had an initial eval of speech and the therapist was very pleased with his language, how many words he says and the number of words he uses in a sentence. He has a few articulation issues that could be addressed. He doesn't have much of a nasal quality to his speech. For now we'll have him screened for speech through our school district and if he qualifies he'll start then. If he doesn't qualify we will have him get private speech therapy. The psychologist felt that William was doing quite well as far as attachment for only being home with us 3 months. We return to the team again in 6 months and that's how it'll continue. We're so thankful about the results and ever grateful for the thoughts and prayers for William.
