black and white Wednesday ~ finding my own style

For this black and white Wednesday I went back
about 11 months ago for these 3.
I shot many images that day and these were a few of my favorites.
They were taken in the botanical gardens in the city near us,
it was mid April and Grace and I went out on an overcast, drizzly day. Originally I processed them in color. As I look at these now with a different eye, I can see the mood lent extremely well to contrasty black and whites.

By the way my daughter Grace was also in a bit of a 'mood' that day as you can see by her expression. I actually kind of like the look on her face.

I have only been shooting with a DSLR for a little over a year and
and I'm still finding my way as far as my own style...what is essentially 'me' and my signature. I believe style is determined by time and what I focus on in my pictures. I obviously love children and people, but I also love still life, nature and architecture. But probably my favorite part of photography is composing a shot and being able to express myself artistically. And you know... I've just realized that as I write this post, I think I've described my own personal style. I think it evolves just like we all do...growing and changing constantly.

(I used Jessica's Lightroom preset called Caramel Creme to convert these to black and white. You can find Jessica here at One Willow Studios. Her presets are amazing and I use them frequently.)

Please go over to Lisa's blog, The Long Road to China to see many more black and whites.

And Happy Wednesday and St. Patrick's Day!

Gail, I remember these images when you posted them way back with their vibrant colors....however, looking at them in B&W...they look completely different.

They are really just gorgeous. You are gifted in many things and composition is one of those things. I just love every single one of these.

And, you know what I've said about Miss Grace.....sorry if you're sick of hearing it but I'm gonna say it again...she should ABSOLUTELY be a model...she has one of those faces that you just can't forget! Simply STUNNING!

OH WOW.... you are so right!! At first glance I thought these were brand new photos, but I do remember these in full color and WOW, do they look different! The mood is fantastic!

Not that they were not beautiful in full color, but they are OUTSTANDING black and whites.....and by far some of my most favorite black and whites you have shared with us this far.

I love all of these, but that close up is simply stunning.....I love the expression you captured. She is such a natural and obviously so comfortable with you and the camera!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Stunning b/w's, Gail!! I love the natural texture in the first one, especially!! Your style is your artistic vision - and you have quite a gift!

That is one of my favorite presets from Jessica. It is so nice for skin tones and landscape both.

Gail, these are great images. Grace is a perfect model (and she is amazingly timeless. If I didn't know her I wouldn't be able to tell how old she is. She has such a mature expression and is truly a beauty.)

I love your personal photography style and would never have know you've only had a DSLR for a year!!! Wow.

Have a great day!

I didn't see these in color, but the B&W look stunning! I especially like the last picture! I just picked up my first DSLR in December and if I could be this good in one year's time, I'd be beyond thrilled!

These are beautiful - the high contrast black and whites are perfect for the light and the scenery. I love botanical gardens, they're perfect for photos like these - actually these remind me very much of the Botanical Gardens near my home in Madison - thanks for the reminder to visit them this spring!
